Settled is a small community app for people in their first few years out of college in Boston. This page explains what we collect, why we have it, and how to get rid of it. If anything here is unclear, email hello@joinsettled.com and ask.
What we collect
Only what you give us, plus what the app needs to work.
- Your account. Your email address and name. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email, name, and profile picture from Google. We never see your Google password.
- Your profile. Whatever you choose to put there: photo, bio, school, graduation year, job, interests, neighborhood, and any links you add.
- Housing preferences, if you turn on the roommate search. That includes your budget range, move-in timing, and the neighborhoods you are considering. This is off unless you switch it on.
- Activity in the app. Events you host, RSVP to, or check in at; feedback you leave; people you connect with or block; and messages you send.
- Photos you upload. Note that photos can carry hidden camera information such as the device used and the date taken. We store the file as you sent it.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with advertisers.
- We run no advertising trackers and no third party analytics. There is no Google Analytics, no Meta pixel, nothing following you around.
- We do not read your private messages except when investigating a report.
- We do not collect your precise location. Neighborhood is something you type.
Who can see what
Your profile is public or private, and you choose which. A public profile can be found in search and shows up on events you are attending. A private profile stays hidden from anyone you have not connected with, who will see only your name and photo. If you block someone, the two of you stop appearing to each other.
Your email address is never shown to other members. Your housing preferences are visible only while your roommate search is switched on. Your friends list is private.
Companies that help us run this
Settled is small, so parts of it are handled by other companies. They only get what they need to do their job.
- Clerk handles signing in, including Google sign-in.
- Neon hosts the database, and Railway and Vercel run the app itself.
- Resend sends our email, such as event confirmations and invitations.
- Stripe processes payments, which today applies only to venues paying for a featured listing. Card details go straight to Stripe and never reach us.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from your profile settings at any time. That removes your profile, photos, housing preferences, RSVPs, and posts. Messages you sent may remain in the other person's inbox, in the same way a text message does. If an event you hosted already happened, we may keep a record that it took place.
You can also email hello@joinsettled.com and ask us to delete it, or to send you a copy of what we hold.
How long we keep things
We keep your information for as long as your account is open. After you delete it, backups may take up to 30 days to age out. We keep records of safety reports longer, so that someone removed for harming others cannot immediately return.
Age
Settled is for adults, and you must be 18 or older to use it. If we learn that someone under 18 has made an account, we will remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will say so by email or in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
